HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN USING TIKTOK AND WHY DID YOU START?
I got on TikTok just before quarantine. I played with it here and there but just as a casual. The first TikTok I made was actually during a wildfire.
I’ve spent the last 8 years working for the fire department as a firefighter and paramedic, so I decided to snap a few quick videos during our time fighting a wildfire. We were there for 4 days so I had plenty of time to edit 😛
People loved it! I had hundreds of thousands of views! I had no idea an organic reach like that was possible so I quickly shifted my subject matter over to my one true love – entrepreneurship and started figuring it out from there. I talk about this a lot. Just start. I started with firefighting videos and shifted to business and finance. It doesn’t matter where you start, just as long as it’s NOW.
You need something to shape and refine.
DID YOU FIND IT EASY OR HARD TO GET TO GRIPS WITH?
Very hard at first, but then it gets quite easy. Let me explain. The hardest part for me was the fear of failure and judgement from my peers. I was terrified of what the guys at the firehouse would say. I didn’t even tell my parents or my brothers what I was up to.
But the more I looked at it analytically and the more I read on the subject, I quickly understood that it doesn’t matter. Nobody cares. Nobody gives a shit about how I look on camera or how I sound. They’re too busy thinking about themselves.
I used that knowledge as my armor and just went for it. And none of my fears were real. I made them all up in my head. I got nothing but love and support from those around me.
Then it became easy. As soon as I stopped giving a shit about how sounded or what I looked like, I could snap quik tiktoks, make quick edits and just get it out there.Hard, then easy 🙂
WHAT SUCCESSES HAVE YOU SEEN WITH TIKTOK SO FAR?
It’s been incredible. I had no idea this many people cared about business, finance and crypto. I had no idea there were so many people who were confused about starting a business.
I get messages almost daily with mini successes. I hear things like: “I started my business because of your TikToks!” Or “I opened my first LLc thanks to your YouTube video!” how about “I opened my ROTH IRA today thanks to you!”.
Who else gets to encourage 18 year olds to open a ROTH IRA and invest for retirement?
Each one of those is a success. That shit is cool.
WHAT DO YOU LIKE ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITIES THE PLATFORM PROVIDES FOR ENTREPRENEURS/SMALL BUSINESS OWNERS? CONVERSELY, WHAT ARE SOME CHALLENGES?
TikTok gives the people what they want. It’s organic, authentic nature weeds out bullshit and brings value to the top. I like that.
If you can bring value in any way, get on TikTok.
However, it does have it’s challenges. The interface needs some work. Managing comments is impossible. The messaging could use some utility like attachments. More in depth analytics would be cool too.
But we have to remember, TikTok is young. I’m sure the changes are coming.
HOW DOES TIKTOK DIFFER FROM AND COMPLEMENT YOUR OTHER SOCIAL CHANNELS (YOUTUBE, PODCAST, INSTAGRAM ETC)
TikTok is my first real social media! I didn’t think anyone wanted to hear what I had to say so I never tried anything else. The immediate organic reach gave me the confidence I needed to start branching out and growing a presence on other social media.
TikTok is where it began. I then slowly started building out my instagram, then facebook, linkedin, pinterest, twitter, YouTube… ALL OF IT! And it was tedious. But now that I have a presence on all of it, I am able to take successful TikToks and share them everywhere.
It even inspired me to start a YouTube channel, which is where I release a bulk of my content now.
WHO IS YOUR TARGET AUDIENCE AND HAS THIS CHANGED SINCE TIKTOK BLEW UP IN 2020?
My target audience is young entrepreneurs, business owners, investors and crypto enthusiasts. Most of my audience is between the ages of 18 and 35. They want answers to questions they didn’t get in school. They want to know stuff that their parents failed to teach them. They want financial literacy. Those are my people 🙂
As TikTok grows in popularity, The range of people who cross my path is incredible. The ages are increasing too! TikTok isn’t just for kids anymore 🙂
HOW DO YOU USE TIKTOK TO REACH YOUR AUDIENCE?
I give them as much value as possible in a very short amount of time. That’s it. I pick a question that needs answering, or explanation and I explain it. I keep it simple.
Entity structure, finance and taxation are boring and complex subjects. The more you understand about our system, the more empowered you become.

Get on TikTok. Just start. Pick 3 subjects and stick to those subjects. Make at least 1 tiktok a day for 90 days. If you are authentic, and real, you will be successful.
I have personally done it 3 times to prove a point: with my personal brand, my craft company Scorch Marker, and with an account that only talks about pokemon cards.
WHAT MAKES TIKTOK SUCH A UNIQUE PLATFORM FOR BUILDING A BRAND/BUSINESS?
TikTok is unique in a few ways, but the best one? Anyone can go viral. The more content you create, the more chances you have. This is true with just about any platform, but especially, with TikTok.
HOW CAN PROFESSIONALS/SMALL BUSINESSES KEEP COMING UP WITH FRESH CONTENT IDEAS?
Here is my secret. Document – don’t create. I learned that one from Gary Vee. Show us how it’s made. Let us see behind the scenes. Show us your face. Talk about your failures and what you learned. Get real with us. Teach us things or make us laugh.
Focus on documenting your business’s journey.
HOW CAN THEY TAP INTO THE VIRILITY OF MUSIC/TRENDS/THE ALGORITHM ON TIKTOK?
Get attention quickly, and deliver value. Use the word “You” in the first sentence. Watch time goes up 66%.
Get straight to the point. Stick to your subject matter. Use the app to learn what people are watching and what’s popular. Bonus point if you can tailor a trend to your niche.

Start – right now. Post every day and engage with your community.
Use hashtags that describe your ideal customer/viewer. Do not use hashtags that describe you or your brand.
Answer and like every comment.
Lighting is more important than any camera, angle, filter, or scene.
It’s 2021 – get a microphone! Audio is more important than video on TikTok.
Document, don’t create.
Crosspost your TikToks on YouTube Shorts. Use the #shorts
Pick a niche and stick to it. TikTok needs to learn what you are so it can serve your content to the right viewer.
Nobody cares about how you sound or how you look – just start.
